Paradise Lost

Welcome readers😊 to my blog.

From the Ancient time we have been searching for the roots of human existence. And still we are not sure who was the first (hu)man. But some scriptures help us to know something about our roots and the beginning of the human world. Such as like…

                          ●   The Bible
                          ●   The Manusmriti

In Indian scriptures we find that Manu was the first man who existed on earth and then the life begins. And in christianity we find that Adam was the first man created by God from murd. But these scriptures are from divine perspective. We have so many questions regarding these but we can't ask. But literature turned it and ask the questions. Writers rewrite some parts of scriptures to show that God was not always right.

So my task (click here to read the blog) which is given by Dr. Pro. Dilip Barad is to share my understanding on different perspective like divine perspective and human perspective.

1 what is your understanding of Human perspective and Divine perspective ? Give your illustrations to support your understanding…..

We can see the whole world from different perspectives. And every time the world seems different, because everyone has their own beliefs and viewpoints. And they will see the whole world from their perspective which one good for them. As like as here are two perspectives. One is from God and Second one is from Human. Let's have a look….

Divine perspective:

All the religions and scriptures are seeing the world from Divine perspective. Let's see what is divine perspective….

● God centric world
● Blind faith in God
● No space for reasons and thoughts
● God makes rules and only he justifies

So as we mentioned above the whole world ruling by the God. Whatever he says, whatever he makes one has to do or follow the rules and if one denies he or she would be punished. We can take examples from the 'Bible' when he punished Adam and Eve. In the Bible we find that God was very injustice. Like as we know he made  first Adam and that and told them not to eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge. So the first question is…
  • Why did God make the tree of knowledge, and if he made why did he refuse to eat it ?

Now Satan provokes Eve to eat the apple from the tree of knowledge and after arguments Eve ate the apple and then she went to Adam and suggested him to eat. When God knows all about this he punished both Adam and Eve accept Satan who provoked Eve. God punished both by saying….

Because you have done this, cursed are you above
all cattle, and above all wild animals upon your belly you shall
go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put
enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed
and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise
his heel." (God in Genesis)

They just made one mistake and God gave them this kind of punishment. On the other hand Satan was an evil and bad person though God didn't punish him to do this type of work. God punished Adam and Eve both but he punished Eve more cruelly than Adam….

"I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." (God)

Thus, we can see that God was very biased. Adam and Eve made the same mistake but he punished Eve more than Adam.

Human perspective:

Paradise Lost is en epic poem in blank verse.  The book is divided into twelve books. Here we are considere with only book nine. The poem is follows the biblical story in a new form.

Human perspective is quite different from divine perspective. Here the God is not in the center. Let's have a look what is Human perspective….

            ●  Interest in Humanism
            ●  Human was the center of universe
            ●  Human centric world
            ●  space for reasons and thoughts

Literature is something which is raises the voice and questioning God. Milton's

                'Paradise lost'

Is the example of human perspective. The world which is seeing by (hu)man. That's why in his Paradise lost we can find human's greediness, evilness, bad thinking etc in Satan's character. In the world from human perspective one has the right to speak, to do arguments against wrong things. One can raise her or his voice.

In Milton's 'Paradise Lost' we can find human emotions, feelings, greediness and evilness. All that aspect which we can find in human beings. We can find human's curiosity to gain knowledge in Eve's character. We can find true love in Adam's character and we can find evilness in Satan's character.

2. How do you read the character of Eve as transgressor and yet defendable ?

In Milton's 'Paradise Lost' the character of Eve is lively than other characters. She is described in the holy Bible  as a beautiful woman who disobedient to God. And also she is portrait inferior then Adam. She is very curious to know about everything. When Satan the serpent provokes her to eat the fruit of knowledge she agreed to eat. Because she is inferior than Adam. She wanted to know everything good or evil, wanted to gain knowledge…

The woman saw that the tree was good for food ... and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took off the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Thus, she also gave the fruit to Adam because she didn't want to lose him. Milton portrait her as a human and this is very normal for a human to do mistakes and she did because she wanted to gain knowledge. However Rossetti emphasises Eve's status as a fictive character….

 It is only a legend
You say? But what
Is the meaning of the legend
If not
To give blame to women most
And most punishment?

But according to Christian doctrine her 'willful crime' shall come to be called  'Felix Culpa' a fortunate fall for it will bring God's son to the earth.
